When you begin to think about having a Web site, you need to follow a series of steps to make sure your site is successful. It can be to your benefit to plan it carefuly to make it usable to all.
Figureing out what your goals are should be your first priority when creating a Web site. Ask yourself, what do you want to accomplish by having a Web site. Keep notes and write them down so that you remember them as you go through the design process with your designer.
Organizing your site from the beginning will save you time and fristration at a later date. It is worth taking the time in the beginning. Know your folder hierachy before you start putting your pages together. This will keep your site organized and easy to work in.
Alot of time will be saved if you plan your design first before you start adding content. You can create a mock up on paper if you want. This is where you will figure out your colors, and your fonts, your photo layouts. Everything should be decided before you start work. This saves from having to rebuild again and again.
Having consistency throughout your site helps the users to have a good experience. They should be able to go through your pages without getting confused or feeling lost because they look differently. The navigation is important to the sucess of your site.
Your visitors should be able to move from one area to the other easily. The Navigation should have consistency. If your navigation bar is across the top of your page on the main page, it should be there throughout the rest of the site.
Once we have the design figured out, you can create and gather your content. This is your text, photos, documents and other items. Make sure you have all your items so we won't have to continually stop development to find an image or a text file.
Keep all your images and graphics in a folder and have them clearly labeled so they can be dropped in the appropriate pages.
I hope this has helped you to step in the right direction to the start of getting your website built for you. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have.
